Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Samsung’s new project in Noida has the capacity to produce 120 million smartphones every year. Located in Sector 81 of Noida, this world’s largest mobile phone factory has been built and is expected to create around 15,000 local jobs.
According to Samsung, after the launch of world’s largest mobile phone manufacturing plant, company’s production capacity will increase to 120 million devices per year just from Noida plant from the existing capacity to produce 68 million units each year. Samsung further added that this move is a part of ‘Make for the world’ initiative.
Spread over an area of 35 acres, Samsung’s new plant in Noida will produce a wide range of mobile phones. It will manufacture all types of smartphones ranging from low-end mobile phones to brand’s flagship phones like Samsung Galaxy S9, Samsung galaxy S9+ etc. Not just increased production, with the better facilities, more government support, and advanced technologies, Samsung is also planning to compete with its rivals such as Apple and Google by designing better smartphones than their popular models iPhone X and Pixel 2 respectively.
Why Samsung’s new factory in Noida is such big news?
There is no doubt that Samsung opening the world’s largest mobile phone factory in India for the campaign ‘Make for the world with Samsung’ is big news. But what are the factors making it so special not just for India but also the world? Here are some of the points:
- Political Significance
Billions of dollars of investment and the promise of creating around 15,000 jobs drew the attention of everyone. Not just PM Narendra Modi and South Korean President, Moon Jae-in came together to inaugurate the factory but Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and commerce and industry minister Suresh Prabhu also witnessed the ceremony and the only reason behind this was the high political significance of the move.
In his speech, PM Modi said that Samsung’s world’s largest mobile phone factory in India is a huge achievement for the government’s flagship “Make in India” campaign.
Talking about the manufacturing capacity of the new unit, the prime minister said, “Today is an important day in making India a global hub of manufacturing… This 50 billion-rupee investment will not only strengthen Samsung’s business ties in India, it will also play a key role in India-Korea relations.”
- Market Supremacy
Samsung ruled the Indian smartphone market for years, but in the past few years, the brand got tough competition from Chinese brand Xiaomi. The Chinese brand offered smartphones with many similar features of Samsung phones at really cheap prices. Buyers wholeheartedly accepted Xiaomi’s affordable phones like Mi A1 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro. But now, it is expected that Samsung will again take its position back by manufacturing better smartphones at attractive prices
Samsung’s Noida plant was already functioning since 1996. The brand expanded its area and production capacity after a fresh investment of 4,915 crores. This move will not just help the South Korean electronics giant strengthen its business ties in India but will also strengthen India-Korea relations.
