“Privacy is a myth”

This was considered too good to be true, but things have changed since the dawn of the Internet, once privacy-friendly internet where one can share their voice anonymous is no longer the same, once the internet was literally the decentralized network of internally connected computers, but now big corporation and government owes most of its part, and we can’t trust either of them for keeping our data safe in fact are ample of evidence that they are already misusing it whether it be Facebook saga or Australian anti-encryption law.

But the opensource community of the Internet has always been the foot soldier in the fight has it to be the creation of Tor or blockchain based Cryptocurrency all are trying their bit.

OnionShare is one of the effort to protect your identity and allow you to share files without your identity being exposed to the establishment.

What is OnionShare?

OnionShare is a P2P Tor service allowing users to securely sending and receiving files over a Tor network.

OnionShare starts a web server allowing it to get connected and access Tor Onion Service in a stealthy manner over the internet. An unguessable address is generated and is shared to the recipient to open in the Tor browser to download the files. No separate server or third-party file-sharing services are required and your computer works as a file host. The speed of uploading and downloading files may depend on connected internet speed and may vary as per Tor protocol.

How does it work?

As OnionShare works on Tor and unlike the services like email, Google Drive, DropBox, WeTransfer, or any other way people typically send files to each other, when you use OnionShare you don’t give any companies access to the files that you’re sharing. So long as you share the unguessable web address in a secure way (like pasting it in an encrypted messaging app), no one but you and the person you’re sharing with can access the files.

Some times it may happen that person who wants to send a file to you doesn’t have onionShare installed or it’s not available to them at given point if time, in those cases, onion share provides a receiving mode, where the OnionShare generates a sharing link using which user can upload files to receive it at OnionShare end.

Know more

To learn how OnionShare works, what its security properties are, and how to use it, check out the wiki. You need Tor Browser to open and download the file.
