Seems like Google is quite serious about making its Google Maps application more advanced than ever before. Reason being, not so long ago we have covered the news of Google introducing ‘Clever’ feature that made the ‘Google maps get directions’ feature handier. Now, Google has come up with another feature that will add an Augmented Reality (AR) mode to the previous Google maps app. Yes, you heard it right! Google is going to introduce the AR navigation feature in its Google maps application. Though you might have to wait for a little more time as Google is planning to release the latest Google Map app for local guides viz. advanced Google Maps users in the initial stage. The final version of Google Maps new feature will commercially be released for common users once the testing is successfully completed.
According to The Wall Street Journal, which had a chance to try out the feature, Google has chosen a handful of “Local Guides” to give AR directions a spin. As the new features of Google maps are quite compelling, it will surely be a game changer. Google maps AR navigation feature opens up the camera of your phone once you click on the AR mode. As soon as you choose the AR Mode and hold your phone upright, it will start analyzing your Google maps traffic and surroundings. Google maps will use the Street View Data that the company has accumulated over the years to provide the best outcomes.
One thing that needs to be understood here is that Google will use the basic GPS technology to get an idea of your current location. Once Google maps collect the information about your location, it will then use the camera to provide you with a more precise location. The new AR implementation in Google maps will also show 3D arrows to guide you with Google maps directions. It will show you 3D arrows on your phone screen and let you know which direction you should head to reach out to your destination.
While a lot of Google maps users are super excited about this new Google navigation feature, some are concerned about the battery life and safety precautions while using the Google Maps augmented reality feature. Google has already addressed some questions and enlightened users that the upcoming feature is not meant for car navigation. Furthermore, the AR mode is not meant for using all the time while walking. However, there are many questions that are yet to be answered. Some of them being the privacy concerns as the latest AR Google maps live requires to capture real-time footage of people and locations.
